Unlocking the Potential of EAC: Why Busia's Infrastructure Development Matters

Opinion:

The Busia border, a historic crossing point between Kenya and Uganda, has connected the two nations for centuries. The Samia people, a community spanning both sides of the border, have traded and interacted across this boundary for generations. In the 1980s, permits were introduced, regulating movement across the border. In 2018, the Busia One Stop Border Post (OSBP) was launched, streamlining border control and trade. Building on this progress, investing in modern infrastructure will unlock Busia's full potential, driving regional growth and development.

Investing in Busia's Infrastructure:

- Efficient roads and highways

- Expanded and upgraded border crossing facilities

- Railway connectivity

-  Airport or airstrip

Benefits:

- Enhanced regional connectivity and movement of goods, services, and people

- Boosted trade and commerce, aligning with EAC goals

- Supported growth of regional industries (agriculture, manufacturing, tourism)

- Strengthened economic ties between Uganda, Kenya, and other EAC member states

- Demonstrated commitment to EAC's integration agenda

- Facilitated operationalization of the Mulwanda border point, enhancing trade and economic cooperation between Uganda and Kenya

By developing Busia's infrastructure, we can create a model for effective regional integration, promoting economic growth, job creation, and improved living standards across the region. The Mulwanda &  butebo border point will become a vital trade and economic gateway between Uganda and Kenya, fostering increased trade and economic cooperation.

Let us prioritize Busia's development and unlock its full potential, driving regional growth and transformation.
