- At least 10 people were killed, scores injured in gunfire during tax protests in Kenya's capital Nairobi
- Kenya's parliament approved a contentious finance bill that aims to raise additional taxes
- Protesters oppose tax rises in a country already reeling from a cost-of-living crisis
- Protesters clash with police, who used tear gas and water cannon and fired over the heads of demonstrators to disperse crowds
- Sections of the Kenyan parliament were set on fire as protesters overwhelmed police to storm the compound

What you need to know about Kenya protest 
- Protestors have called for a nationwide strike to protest controversial tax reforms that are currently before parliament.
- The government has warned protestors against engaging in violence and has given them a deadline of 6:30 p.m. local time to end the strike.
- The protests, led by young Kenyans, began on June 21 and have largely been peaceful.
- At least 200 people were injured and more than 100 arrested in the first four days of protests, according to Amnesty International and other human rights groups.
- One person died when police opened fire on protesters on June 21.
- The financial bill, which was introduced in May, includes a wide range of tax reforms and increases, including new levies on digital content creation and taxes on bank transfers and digital money payments.
- The bill also includes a 16% value-added tax on bread and a 25% excise duty on raw and refined vegetable cooking oil.
- Protesters say the bill will ultimately increase overall costs and are demanding that it be thrown out.
